Cornwall Canal near Cumberland Street. Ontario

Cornwall Canal near Cumberland Street.

This card is postmarked 1905, although the photo was taken earlier. The houses to the left are near Cumberland Street. Notice the power lines to the south (right-hand) of the canal bank. The power lines lead from the old powerhouse to the Stormont Cotton Mill seen in the distance on the right. The powerhouse (and its canal) would be behind the photographer to his right and Brookdale Ave., would be on his left – neither is seen in this early photo. (There is a map further down which shows the powerhouse canal.) Water Street is little more than a narrow dirt path along the canal’s edge.
