Here is a GREAT postcard showing the tall St. Lawrence Breweries Ltd, building (on the right) which produced Ale, Porter, and Lager. The Brewery was erected in 1908. A large Bottle House and Warehouse were added in 1917. It was a joint stock Company capitalized at half a million dollars. The Brew Kettle was capable of manufacturing 8,000 gallons of beer per day. During the Great War alcohol content was limited to 2.5%. The many-storied building will be known to seniors as the Ice House situated on the northwest corner of Augustus and Water Streets. Ice was cut from the canal during the winter months and stored in sawdust (a great insulator) in the ice house. It was delivered to homes during the summer until the early 1950s—often by horse-drawn carts. On the left is the Stormont Cotton Mill. In the canal, the swing bridge has been turned to allow the ship to pass through the canal.
