Lock 21, Cornwall, Ontario

Lock 21.

Memory Shared: As children we used to bicycle to Lock 21 to ‘get a ride’ on the lock as the ships maneuvered through the canal. In our late teens, some friends and I swam over to Barnhart Island. The Mohawks grazed their cattle on the island. It was such a beautiful place—but haunting. A hike through the long grass and woods to the end of the island opposite Mille Roches was an ordeal. To see the remnants of what had once been a thriving village demolished for the Seaway was very upsetting. It was as though, in the next minute, someone might walk out of one of the houses. Now it is all under water.
