The eastern entrance to the canal. Cornwall, Ontario

The eastern entrance to the canal.

A fine old postcard of Cornwall’s lower wharf, showing both sailing and steam vessels. The Canada Cotton Mill can be seen to the right. For many years, before the arrival of steam, boats were towed along the canal by a long rope tied to a horse. Boys as young as eight were given the tedious but important job of guiding the horse along the towpath.
