Cornwall Canal at Howard Smith Paper Mill. Cornwall, Ontario

Cornwall Canal at Howard Smith Paper Mill.

Looking East towards Howard Smith, crossing the canal are the control weir and safety barrier which are permanent fixtures. The weir at the North shoreline of the canal (left hand) was to prevent short-circuiting between the inlet and discharge areas of the canal so that no “used” water effluent could re-enter the mill. The weir in the center canal (right hand) was used to control the flow of hydraulic pressure to ensure a proper flow to the intake side of the system. Vessels passed through the old locks at the south side of the canal. At the left of the photo, the old pulp storage area is visible with an overhead conveyor system to unload pulp from canalers. About a mile distant from the stack is the old powerhouse at the canal. It was just visible as a grey block.
