Hotel Fairview on Barnhart Island, Cornwall, Ontario

Hotel Fairview.

Hotel Fairview on Barnhart Island was the home of Asaph John Barnhart. He built an extension to his home so that holidayers could stay on the Island. Barnhart Island was on Canadian soil for many years and then reverted, by treaty, to the Americans. It was settled from earliest times and had farms, a school/church, a cemetery, saw, grist and woolen mills, and two general stores. The Fairview Hotel was popular with fishermen and their families. Although all of the buildings (and the monuments from the cemetery) were removed when much of the Island was flooded during the Seaway. A small portion of the island remains as a park on the American side.
