Cornwall Public Library, Second Street looking West from Sydney Street, Cornwall, Ontario

Second Street looking west from Sydney Street.

On the right is the Post Office building which replaced the old post office, which in turn has been replaced by a “postal outlet” in a strip mall across from Trinity Church. I’ve never understood why we couldn’t keep our original Post Office building and built the Seaway building at Second and Sydney Streets. The same thing happened with the Capitol Theatre. It was torn down to build the Provincial Court building but it wasn’t necessary. Cornwall has a lot of land. Horowitz Park was appropriated to put up the glass-box Chevrier Building. City Hall needs to find the grit to protect Cornwall’s heritage buildings. Today, very little of our history is visible and it’s being replaced with a very bland mish-mash of so-called modernism.
