The Great Fire of 1933

Starting with the F.W. Woolworth’s store (next to the red/brown brick Royal Bank) all of the stores, shops, and upstairs apartments in this block were lost in the Great Fire of 1933. Except for Jardine’s Furniture on the southwest corner near Third Street which was built of brick and did not burn. On the right-hand side of the postcard, notice the sign for the Royal York Cafe. (The restaurants’ section has an interior view of the Cafe.) The Palace Theatre is further along (north) of Pitt Street.
