The scaffolding seen in this photo probably indicates that the picture was taken shortly after the earthquake of September 5, 1944. The decorative finial on the left corner of the church is missing – giving the facade an unbalanced appearance. Many such architectural features and tall tombstones fell during the earthquake, along with hundreds of chimneys. Stonemasons and carpenters were in great demand because autumn was closing in and people needed their chimneys to heat their homes. Oddly, all damaged cemetery stones south of the river turned counterclockwise, while stones damaged on the north side turned clockwise.
