An early photo of Pitt Street, Cornwall, Ontario

An early photo of Pitt Street.

These next two photocards appear to be taken about the same time and are placed here as a “set.”  This photo was taken ca (1886-1896.) A glance at the next card will help viewers recognize the location. On the left, just before the Quaker Oats sign, is the stone wall of the Jail yard. It was torn down years ago. On the right is the corner of Pitt and Water Street. There is a grocery store on the corner. The striped signs on the third electrical pole indicate a barber shop is next. The dormer windows belong to the Lloyd George Hotel. On the right in the distance is Hall’s Hardware Store the word “Hardware” being easily discerned. Pedestrians were thrilled with their paved sidewalks although the streets were still not paved. There are streetcar rails but no overhead wires. The system may have been horse-drawn. A fire hydrant is visible, so the photo was taken after the installation of the town’s waterworks.
