Liggetts Rexall Drug Store. Cornwall, Ontario

Liggetts Rexall Drug Store.

In March 1947, the King George Hotel underwent a massive facelift. The wide verandah from which travelers and hotel guests viewed street happenings and the front of the Hotel was demolished. In its place is the new home of Liggetts Drug Store and Millar’s Men’s Wear. Above them are two floors of modern hotel rooms. In this card and the one before, we can see the many changes made to the King George Hotel. Behind the Rexall Liggetts store, the third-floor dormer windows of the old hotel are still visible but over top of Liggets are modern hotel rooms. Bringloe’s Furniture sign can be seen behind the Grill. The doorway between Liggetts and Miller’s Men’s Wear has a “crown” in bas-relief over top. This door leads to the “King George Hotel”. The former bay window and entrance have been built in rather than projecting from the building.

Memory shared: In September 2010, former Cornwallites Dale and his wife Mirilou (Senior) Jayes of North Carolina visited family in Cornwall. Mirilou is the sister to author Elinor (Senior) Kyte. I met the Jayes in front of the Cornwall Community Museum and it was there that Dale shared a story with me. Dale is one of the two boys standing with their bicycles at the corner of Pitt and Second in front of Liggets. Dale is on the right, and his good friend, Jerry Eaton who lived on Marlborough Street is on the left. Today, Jerry is a retired doctor, living in Calgary. I am so pleased to be able to include this bit of history! Dale studied electrical technology at Ryerson followed by an Industrial Engineering degree from Georgia Tech. This led to a 33-year career with Westinghouse Electric in Georgia USA.
