In the early 1930s, if you had stepped out of the door of the Cornwall library to look west, this scene would have been visible. On the left, is the lawn in front of St. John’s Church which is set back from the street, next is the Street Railway building which is still there today. But it is the right side of the street that has changed drastically when compared with the next image. The above card shows residential buildings, some with shops below and homes above. The scaffolding on the roof beyond the Coca Cola sign is a leftover from a very large billboard used to advertise a garage. The tower of the “old” post office is a constant landmark in many of these pictures although the more modern card (next) shows the Seaway Building at that location and the new post office built one block east to replace the old one. That building is now the Cornwall Library. The clock tower on the Post Office was “saved” and is now in Lamoureux Park at the foot of Pitt Street.
