Cornwall’s first library opened in the Mechanics’ Institute in 1890. It began in the Turner block and later moved to the Glengarry Block on Pitt Street. The home of Cornwall’s library pictured above was built with a Carnegie grant. In the early years, the Andrew Carnegie Foundation gave grants to many communities in both Canada and the U.S.A. so that they could build libraries. Cornwall’s library was designed by George M. Bayly in 1902-03. It was built on the south west corner of Sydney and Second street. In the late 1950s facilities were moved to the Cline House on the south east corner of Second and Amelia Streets and were soon expanded by the addition of the Simon Fraser wing — Cornwall’s centennial project. In recent years the library moved again to the former “new” post office building, directly across from it’s Carnegie funded building on the north east corner of Sydney and Second street.
