In this photo, an addition has been added along Marlborough Street. Cornwall residents made many generous donations towards their hospital. John Herbert Cline and his wife the former Fanny Mae Wilson contributed to the solarium at the front door (where the cars are parked). Later, the upper floor was converted into wards to alleviate overcrowding.
A memory shared… “The solarium should have been saved. They could have built around it. Anyone of an age can tell you about the goldfish. At a time when children weren’t allowed into the wards as visitors, it added to the aura of a hospital. In my mind the atmosphere of the place was church-like (the high stained glass windows, the extreme quiet except for the bubbling water, the architecture). And the smells – a hint of antiseptic, a hint of ether). Perhaps it was just the intensity of being at a serious place, for a serious reason, and being left on one’s own while grown-ups went inside to take care of adult business….” Text by Lyall Manson
