In the early 1900s, the border between Canada and the USA was a simple formality where travelers might be asked where they were born, where were they going, and how long they expected to stay. Travelers returning to their home country were questioned about purchases while they were away and were expected to pay Duty on most items. Smuggling goods was highly popular. The arrow on the Island sign points to the right and says “Canada Customs & Immigration – Stop and Report.” This was for travelers returning home to the USA. The road beside the British flag was for Canadians entering the USA. They were expected to stop and report their destination. The American Customs (shown 3 cards down) had the same rustic appearance.
