Pitt Street opposite the Court House, Cornwall, Ontario

Pitt Street opposite the Court House

Notice the low brick wall with an arched doorway behind the county’s building. This was the county jail yard. It was large and almost like a maze. The high stone wall of the jail yard stretched from the county building, north along the sidewalk of Pitt Street, almost to the radio station next door to the Standard-Freeholder. (Test): by Margaret Cameron) Over the years several men found guilty of murder were hung in the jail yard. When the land was reclaimed the remains of seven bodies were unearthed and moved to a local cemetery.
