Notice the low brick wall with an arched doorway behind the county’s building. This was the county jail yard. It was large and almost like a maze. The high stone wall of the jail yard stretched from the county building, north along the sidewalk of Pitt Street, almost to the radio station next door to the Standard-Freeholder. When the land was reclaimed the remains of seven bodies were unearthed and moved to a local cemetery.
